Alaska is home to a myriad of different fish. The Last Frontier’s lakes and rivers are so diverse, in fact, that it drives anglers from all over the world to take Alaskan fishing trips each year. Here are just a few of the most exciting fish in Alaska!
Lampreys.
When most people think of lampreys, they automatically think of the nightmarish creatures plaguing the Great Lakes. Arctic and pacific lampreys, though, are native types of fish in Alaska. In fact, the state’s Native peoples have even relied on these lampreys as a source of food. Around Thanksgiving time, you can go ice fishing for these fish in Alaska with nets or eel-rakes.
Halibut.
Halibut are one of the most popular types of fish in Alaska, as they can grow to be very large, and very aggressive, making them a worthy challenge and even more worthy prize. Alaska’s halibut season starts in May, and goes through September. Since they can grow so large and offer such a huge challenge, it may be wise to go on a charter fishing trip if you want to catch halibut.
King Salmon.
King salmon fishing is easily one of the most common types of fishing in Alaska. The king salmon, or chinook, is so popular that the Last Frontier even made it their fish. Though they usually grow to be between 25 to 50 pounds, it’s not uncommon to find 60 to 80 pound king salmon fish in Alaska, either. The largest one ever caught competitively weighed 97 pounds. If you’d like to take a crack at catching these fish in Alaska, head to the Last Frontier some time between August and November.
